Hisense Selects Qualcomm's Next Generation MEMS Display for Future Mobile Phones

- Qualcomm's Reflective MEMS Display Coming to the Mobile Phone Marketplace -

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), and Hisense Communication Co., Ltd., one of China's top electronics manufacturers, today at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2007 announced the industry's first collaboration slated to bring to market mobile phones with innovative Qualcomm MEMS displays. Available in 2008, Hisense phones will benefit from the superb viewing quality and low power consumption of Qualcomm's MEMS displays.

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc. has developed the industry's first direct view MEMS display for mobile devices -- a true technological innovation that offers sharp display clarity in a wide range of environmental conditions, including bright sunlight. Based on a reflective technology called interferometric modulation (IMOD), Qualcomm's MEMS displays harness ambient light and require no backlighting, thereby consuming significantly less power than typical displays. Qualcomm's MEMS displays are designed to enhance the consumer's experience by providing more usage time per charge and expanding the capabilities of today's mobile devices.

Hisense is committed to mobile communications product development, production and marketing and ranks among China's top 10 electronics manufacturers. With its strong market position, Hisense plays a leading role in the global electronics industry by continually developing and pursuing new innovative technologies. Hisense offers a broad range of consumer electronics devices, including CDMA mobile phones, with a wealth of experience in the industrial design of mobile terminals. With an annual output of four million CDMA mobile phones and net assets totaling US $772 million, Hisense has more than 10,000 service outlets across China with production bases in South Africa, Hungary, France, Pakistan, Algeria and Iran and sales offices in the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan. Hisense products are exported to approximately 100 countries and regions, including Europe, the Americas, South Asia and Africa.

"Mobile phone handsets are an ideal application for our MEMS displays due to their power savings and excellent outdoor viewing quality," said James Cathey, vice president of business development for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc. "When it comes to cell phones, consumer expectations are continually increasing in terms of where they can use their phones, what types of applications they can run and how long they can use them between charges. Qualcomm's MEMS displays rise to the challenge on all these fronts, furthering the cell phone's position as a ubiquitous consumer product."

"This collaboration with Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc. bodes well for the future of the wireless market and is of great strategic significance to Hisense," said Shi Yongchang, general manager of Qingdao Hisense Communication Co., Ltd. "The technological platform of Qualcomm's MEMS display is a real breakthrough in display technology and will lead to the upgrade of today's communications technology. We look forward to launching more innovative products, in cooperation with Qualcomm, to better serve our customers."

Qualcomm displays are based on MEMS technology, which uses semiconductor-like and thin-film manufacturing processes to produce tiny and highly reliable mechanical devices. In order to deliver displays in mass production quantities, Qualcomm MEMS displays have been uniquely optimized for fabrication on large glass substrates. Qualcomm has established a strategic alliance with Prime View International (PVI), a leading manufacturer of small- and medium-format display modules, to commercialize Qualcomm MEMS displays. With more than 10 years of success in bringing displays to market, PVI is dedicated to driving down cost, size and power consumption of mobile displays.

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc. is delivering the industry's first direct view MEMS displays. Using advanced MEMS technologies, Qualcomm MEMS displays support Qualcomm's overall innovation strategy of increasing the capability of mobile devices while minimizing power consumption. Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc. is headquartered in San Diego, Calif., with offices in San Jose, Calif. and Hsinchu, Taiwan.
